The Quinte Trash Bash is set to return after being stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
Held each spring for more than 20 years, it was cancelled last year when the pandemic hit.
The day brings people together to clean up roadsides, parks and sidewalks in Belleville, Prince Edward County, Quinte West and Tyendinaga Township.
This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents must follow public health guidelines by “bashing trash” solo or with members of their immediate household.
Quinte West Communications Assistant Nick Ogden tells Quinte News, “The biggest part of Trash Bash 2021 is it is something we’re able to do outside with approvals from the health unit, given the status of COVID-19 and the ongoing pandemic and provincial orders.”
“It is very crucial that all participants do it either as a solo participant with members of their immediate household because we are still under provincial order and we are doing our best to keep contact tracing numbers low in our area.”
Each community will be providing supplies in advance so that residents can conduct their clean-ups before May 8 to ensure proper distancing.
People are being asked to hang onto the bags of garbage until drop-off day.
Ogden adds, “The school and business challenges are postponed to limit large gatherings,” and because of the uncertainty of just where and when they are actually in the schools or businesses.
“We just felt that promoting a school challenge or promoting a business challenge was a little counter productive to the whole idea of, we can do the event, but we have to do it safely and as individuals this year.”
People participating in the Trash Bash are asked to follow COVID precautions.
