One Belleville neighbourhood’s loss has turned into a gain for two others.
Belleville Council has decided to reallocate money to certain areas, after residents on Alexander Street opposed a major road reconstruction project back in March, leaving $3.68 million for the city to use elsewhere.
During the regular meeting on Monday, councillors approved a staff report which will see $3.6 million put towards some significant infrastructure work on Albion Street, with the remaining $80,000 going towards the design of a similar project in the Rollins Drive/Chelford Crescent area.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk says feedback from residents around the city played a big part in where the money was moved.
“I had numerous suggestions of where those funds could go instead. It’s kind of like finding someone’s winning lottery ticket. This doesn’t happen very often, but it has happened here and I think we’re all excited about moving forward, with Albion particularly.”
Both projects include replacements or repairs of watermains, sewer infrastructure, sidewalks and roadways, with work being done next year.
