MP Malette, and MPP Allsopp on Synagogue shooting

Local political officials continue to speak out about the shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue Sunday evening.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the shooting last night at Sons of Jacob Synagogue. I have attended the synagogue on several occasions and grew up in the neighbourhood and this senseless act of violence is unimaginable. My thoughts go out to all members of our Jewish community, and to the police officer who was wounded and his family. There is no question that he is a hero and that because of his actions many lives have been saved. This attack was a disgusting act and have no place in our society. “I am shocked and appalled by the horrible act of violence that has rocked our community of Belleville and the Jewish congregation of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue. On the eve of the holiest of Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur, gunfire tore through the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood where Jews have gathered in peace and prayer for decades. An officer has sustained gunshot wounds and is thankfully recovering and, for that, we offer our heartfelt thanks for his heroism and support to both him and his family.  While information is still being gathered by both Belleville Police and the province’s Special Investigations Unit, I have been in contact since last evening with both Prime Minister Carney’s office and the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, as well as my House of Commons colleague MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman, Mayor Neil Ellis and Belleville Police. Again, we want to offer our heartfelt support and open arms in solidarity with the Jewish community in the Bay of Quinte and the members of the Sons of Jacob community.
