A small bridge in Madoc Township has been dedicated to a police constable who died in an incident almost a century ago.
The OPP held a dedication ceremony Thursday at the bridge over the Moira River at the intersection of Highway 62 and Kellers
Bridge Road.
The bridge will now be named the Constable Charles W. St. Charles Memorial Bridge.
St. Charles died about a month after being shot in the chest while trying to collect taxes at a local farm in 1926.
He served as a local police officer around Madoc for 25 years
Biography of Charles W. St. Charles
Constable Charles W. St. Charles resided in Madoc his entire life. He served with the
Madoc Police for 25 years. He had three roles in Central Hastings: bailiff, town
constable and county constable.
On November 15, 1926, while acting in his role as bailiff, Constable St. Charles
executed a tax distress warrant at a nearby farm.
At the farm he was ambushed and shot in the chest. Constable St. Charles later died at home from his injuries
on December 22, 1926.
He was survived by his wife and two children.
