A Belleville man who was detained by Israel, as part of a flotilla heading to Gaza, has been released.
Shahid Mahmood, who is the co-founder of Belleville For Justice and Peace, was in a group of activists heading to the territory with aid for those affected by the war between the Palestinians and Israelis.
The 41 boats were intercepted by Israel’s navy Monday in international waters near Cyprus.
On Thursday morning, Belleville For Justice and Peace officials contacted Quinte News to indicate that Mahmood and the other participants were released and deported to Turkey, from where they will be able to fly home.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned Israel’s treatment of detained activists. OUR PREVIOUS STORY HERE.
We are expecting to hear from Mahmood over the coming days.
