Northumberland OPP conducted a focused enforcement initiative last week to address distracted driving with a goal to reduce collisions, change driver behaviour, and reinforce that distraction behind the wheel is never worth the risk.
Over the course of the week-long initiative, officers laid the following charges:
- 52 cell phone-related charges
- 3 seat belt offences
- 39 other Highway Traffic Act charges
Distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of collisions in Ontario.
Provincial data highlights that drivers engaged in distraction-related behaviours significantly increase their risk of causing serious or fatal crashes.
Using a hand-held device while driving is illegal, and penalties for distracted driving can include fines, demerit points, licence suspensions, and increased insurance costs.
Northumberland OPP remind all motorists that even momentary inattention, whether checking a message, adjusting a device, or other distractions, can have devastating consequences.
