The federal government is investing $20 million in the Wellington waste water plant.
The funding was revealed during an announcement on Friday.
Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson thanked the federal government for their contribution, and said the new facility would help reduce costs long term for ratepayers.
“This new facility will do much more than increase capacity. It will use modern treatment technology to significantly improve the quality of treated wastewater released back into the environment,” said Mayor Ferguson. “That means better protection of the natural environment that is so vital to the character and economy of our community.”
The existing plant was constructed in 1975 and is near capacity. After a master servicing plan was completed in 2021, design work began on a recommended new facility.
The project involves the construction of an Aerobic Granular Sludge wastewater treatment plant. An equalization tank for the existing wastewater plant that was built in 2023 will be repurposed as the main tank in the new wastewater treatment plant.
