The City of Quinte West has asked city staff to write up a report looking into an amendment to a signs by-law that would enact a ban on signs that go against the Canadian Human Rights Act on public property.
In an email to Mayor Jim Harrison, resident Georgina Duckles outlined a proposal to change or implement a new signs by-law citing instances of drag performances being targeted by protests in Ontario.
Duckles says in the email that drag artists are being targeted by organized campaigns that limit their ability to earn a living.
During correspondence at the City of Quinte West’s council meeting on Wednesday, Councillor Shelley Stedall referenced the letter and asked if it was possible to create a report looking into the possibility of amending the signs by-law.
Council carried a motion to have staff write up a report.
The report will be brought to a future council meeting.
