Belleville council has taken the first step toward upgrading the city’s sewage treatment plant so it will continue operating for years to come, even in a power outage .
At its Monday meeting council approved the most qualified and second lowest bid from Thornhill’s Associated Engineering to evaluate and provide detailed design for a new backup electrical system at the city’s sewage treatment plant. Five companies were considered for the work.
The cost for the work is just over $420,000 including tax.
The current backup generator is 40 years old and was meant to serve just a small portion of the plant.
And since then a lot of new equipment has been installed increasing the demand for power across the board.
The engineering work will lead to the eventual tendering and development of a new backup power system to keep all of the plant running, even in the dark.
