Belleville’s warming centre has seen a fair amount of activity through its 14 openings so far this winter.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Patry, who oversees the warming centre, tells Quinte News they have seen about 150 people come through the doors during the cold winter nights, with an average of eight to ten people a night.
He says the warming centre, which is run inside the former Belleville Police Headquarters at 93 Dundas Street East, has a capacity of 29 people, under current health and safety regulations.
The Warming Centre is opened on nights when the forecast temperature is -10C or lower, or if the forecast windchill is -15C or lower.
While beds and meals aren’t provided, the centre offers a chance for those who need to get in from the cold to at least get a few hours of warmth overnight.
