Central Hastings OPP have made an arrest after items were stolen from several vehicles in Stirling.
On Saturday morning, officers received reports of multiple thefts from vehicles that had occurred overnight in the area of West Front Street and Church Street. Officers worked closely with the community and conducted an extensive canvass of the area to collect video surveillance and CCTV footage, which ultimately helped investigators identify a suspect.
On Sunday, officers received information that led investigators to a residence in Stirling. Police recovered some stolen property, including a laptop computer and other items reported stolen during the overnight thefts. Officers subsequently arrested a suspect without incident.
Dereck Czaikowsky, a 37-year-old Belleville man, was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and trespassing at night.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville. Police believe that there may be more victims, and that not all of the stolen property was recovered. Anyone who was a victim of these thefts who has not spoken to police is encouraged to contact the OPP.
