A traffic stop has led to an arrest related to theft investigations in Brighton.
The first investigation began on June 18, after police received a report that liquor had been stolen from a business on Park Street.
The individual had left the location prior to the arrival of officers.
OPP began an investigation and an individual was sought in relation to the incident.
A few weeks later, on June 29, a complainant reported to police that a theft had taken place at a business on Main Street in Brighton.
The caller advised that a person had stolen approximately $400 worth of merchandise before leaving the area in a vehicle.
Police attended and initiated an investigation, this time resulting in an individual being identified related to the matter.
OPP officers were on patrol in the area of Elizabeth Street and Oliphant Street in Brighton when they conducted a traffic stop.
During the interaction, an officer spotted a passenger in the vehicle who was sought in connection with the theft investigations.
The passenger was taken into custody.
Twenty-eight-year-old Leena Canfyn-Crawford of Brighton has been charged with:
- Theft under $5,000 – two counts
- Failure to comply with undertaking – two counts
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in August 2026.
Police continued their investigation and determined that the driver was suspended and committing a number of other offences.
As a result, the driver, a 33-year-old female from Brighton, was charged with:
- Driving while under suspension
- Windshield obstructed
- Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
- Fail to surrender insurance card
