On the same day that Belleville council sent the Southeast Public Health budget request back for a review, the public health board of directors learned some positive financial news.
At its meeting on Wednesday, board members heard that the amalgamated health unit may have finished 2025 with an approximate surplus of $3.6 million.
The surplus, contained in a draft unaudited statement was mostly attributed to one-time funding from the province as part of the amalgamation process.
Subject to audit the projected surplus will be left in reserve for financial sustainability.
The Board of Health will revisit the financial projections at its March 25 meeting.
Also on Wednesday, Belleville council asked that Southeast Public Health lower their budget increase to the city to three per cent from the requested five per cent.
