Members of the Lennox and Addington County OPP. along with the Highway Safety Division TIME Team charged twenty-seven drivers in a one-day joint cell phone and seat belt operation in L&A County.
On June 9, 2023, the LA&A OPP, along with the Highway Safety Division TIME Team conducted cell phone and seat belt enforcement in the detachment area. Officers laid 25 cell phone charges and two charges of failure to ensure a child was properly restrained. The drivers charged with the using their cell phones while driving face a $615 fine with three demerit points and a three-day licence suspension upon conviction. In the case of failing to ensure the children were properly restrained, it resulted in two $240 fines and two demerit points. While very expensive, this could have had much more tragic results had the vehicle been involved in a collision.
The OPP remind all drivers that using a hand-held communication device while driving is distracted driving and can have tragic results. Drivers are encouraged to use hands free devices only for the safety of themselves and other road users.
