Kingston police, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), conducted a commercial vehicle safety blitz on April 22, 2026, focused on commercial motor vehicles travelling within the City of Kingston.
During the initiative, officers and MTO enforcement personnel inspected 33 commercial motor vehicles to help ensure vehicles on local roadways are safe and in compliance with provincial regulations. The inspections were carried out as part of ongoing efforts to promote road safety and reduce the risk of collisions caused by mechanical issues or improperly maintained vehicles. As a result of the inspections, 20 charges were laid, and 13 vehicles were deemed out of service due to safety-related concerns.
Inspections focused on key areas, including but not limited to:
· Mechanical fitness (example: braking systems, suspensions, frames)
· Load security
· Driver compliance
· Equipment standards (example: lights, wipers, seatbelts)
These inspections are an important proactive measure to identify safety concerns before they lead to serious incidents on the road.
“These are very large vehicles that share our roadways with us… It’s very important we have our commercial motor vehicle inspectors here to check the vehicles thoroughly, and make sure that if there are any safety issues, [the vehicles] are pulled off the road.” – Constable Cameron Mack, Traffic Safety Unit at Kingston police.
Kingston Police Service will continue to collaborate with partner agencies on enforcement initiatives aimed at improving safety and compliance across Kingston roadways.
