Prince Edward County council is calling on the provincial government to help tackle homelessness.
During Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Mayor Steve Ferguson put a motion on the floor to call on the provincial government to help communities tackle homelessness.
The motion calls for Prince Edward County to urge the provincial government to acknowledge that homelessness in Ontario is a crisis, and to commit to ending homelessness in Ontario.
The motion also says that the Ontario government is responsible for the current homelessness crisis, stating that it is the result of under investment and poor policy choices by the province, and says that individual municipalities don’t have the resources to solve the issue on their own.
“We have an obligation to deal with this matter. First on and head on and it’s becoming worse and worse and worse,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson. “I think all of us around the horseshoe here, hear that on a daily basis.”
The motion passed, and copies of the motion are being sent to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services, and the Minister of Health.
