Northumberland County is kicking off its 2026 construction season, advancing priority infrastructure projects that support safe transportation, economic growth, and connected communities.
This year’s program places a strong focus on completing major intersection improvements, advancing multi-year road reconstruction, and rehabilitating critical bridge infrastructure across the county.
“Each construction season builds on the last, and in 2026 we are focused on delivering key projects that enhance safety, improve connectivity, and ensure our infrastructure keeps pace with growth,” states Director of Public Works Denise Marshall. “These investments reflect a continued commitment to maintaining a reliable transportation network while preparing for the future.”
Key Projects for 2026
Welcome Intersection Improvements (Port Hope)
Work will begin in May to complete upgrades at the intersection of County Road 2, County Road 10, and County Road 74, building on construction initiated in 2025. These improvements will enhance safety and traffic flow at a complex intersection identified through study as contributing to driver confusion. The project includes pedestrian crossings, flashing signals, and enhanced street lighting.
County Road 64 Reconstruction (Brighton)
A major priority for 2026, work intensifies on this multi-year reconstruction project in partnership with the Municipality of Brighton. Construction will take place between Elizabeth Street and Harbour Street and continue through late fall. Improvements include upgraded underground infrastructure, active transportation features, traffic calming measures, cycling facilities, and roadway reconstruction. County Road 64 serves as a critical arterial route connecting Highway 401 to Prince Edward County.
Trent River Bridge Rehabilitation (Trent Hills)
Significant rehabilitation work will be undertaken on the Trent River Bridge on County Road 30 north of Campbellford to extend the lifespan of this critical structure and ensure its continued safe use for residents, businesses, and visitors. Construction is expected to begin early July until October.
County Road 30 Rehabilitation (Trent Hills)
Pavement rehabilitation of County Road 30 between 8th and 11th Line will include the replacement of culverts, asphalt and gravel shoulders. It will also include the addition of paved shoulders.
Pavement Preservation and Rehabilitation
In addition to major projects, the County continues to invest in maintaining over 500 kilometres of roadway through preventative maintenance, across multiple municipalities. This summer this work will include:
· 8 km – paving
· 11 km – micro surfacing
· 16 km – crack sealing
· 16 km – surface treatment on county roads
Planning and Design Initiatives
Several environmental assessments and studies will be undertaken in 2026 to support future infrastructure improvements, including:
· County Road 45 between Roseneath and Fenella Environmental Assessment
· Elgin Street widening and improvements to the Brook Road / Elgin Street intersection Environmental Assessment
· The continuation of the Brook Road rail grade crossing Environmental Assessment
· Corridor and community studies and detailed design in Grafton, Castleton, Hastings, and along County Road 2 between Rodgers Road and Lovshin Road
Design and construction work is also planned for culvert replacements and improvements along County Road 25.
“Maintaining and improving our infrastructure is essential to supporting a strong and connected Northumberland,” adds Marshall. “We recognize construction can bring temporary disruptions, and we appreciate the patience of residents as this important work moves forward.”
