Closing Belleville’s Upper Bridge and turning it into an event space is one possibility for the Front Street structure.
The arched bridge over the Moira River at the north end of the downtown is in need of major rehabilitation.
At Monday’s meeting, city council will discuss a staff report on possible futures for the bridge.
One suggestion being made is that the bridge be closed to traffic and be turned into an event space becoming a gathering place concerts or even a skating rink in the winter.
Ultimately, staff are recommending repairs occur within the next two years and that the function of the Upper Bridge remains as it is until it can be studied within the Transportation Master Plan to determine the impacts closing the bridge would have on traffic patterns.
The Transportation Master Plan is due to be updated this year.
