A woman with ties to the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory will be part of Canada’s Olympic Team.
Jillian Weir will be taking part in the hammer throw.
In a Tweet she says most people know she is mixed race, but may not know her background. She says it includes Jamaican, English, Canadian, and Mohawk.
Weir’s mother is from Tyendinaga.
She says she’s excited to qualify for the Olympics and represent her Indigenous lineage.
In an interview with CBC she says it is important for Indigenous youth to see themselves in a sport they do not always have access to.
