Winemakers, from the Quinte region and nationwide, are breathing a sigh of relief.
On Monday, Bay of Quinte riding MP and Parliamentary Secretary of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Neil Ellis announced a $101 million investment in the wine sector to be spread over two years.
It’s not known at this point how much of the money will go to Prince Edward County and other local wineries.
Winemakers were concerned that they’d be hurt by having to pay a fifty cent per bottle excise tax starting next year.
They had been exempt from paying that tax to the federal government since 2006.
The news is seen as a positive boost to the industry by the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association.
