Belleville city council has another decision to make that will be sure to have the attention of the public.
Councillor Ryan Williams announced his resignation Wednesday as it’s believed a federal election could be coming soon.
Williams was elected as the Conservative candidate for Bay of Quinte riding last December.
He says he felt the time was right to resign, considering they just finished the city budget.
Meanwhile, Carol Feeney tells Quinte News that she’d be happy to serve on city council if asked.
Feeney was the former Executive Director of the Quinte Arts Council and now serves on Belleville’s Transit and Library boards.
Late last year, after a close vote, Belleville council voted to have a special committee vet candidates and give council a recommendation on who should take the seat of the late councillor Pat Culhane.
At the time, a slim majority on council were pushing for more diversity on council, and in particular wanted a woman to fill Culhane’s seat.
That decision caused a huge uproar and was reversed later when council chose the person next in line from the last municipal election Tyler Allsopp.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk tells Quinte News the decision on how to fill the seat, or to leave it vacant, is up to all of council but he knows how he feels.
