A plan to breathe some new life into a portion of the former Quinte Exhibition and Raceway property will be before Belleville Council on Monday.
Councillors will see a report on creating an “outdoor recreation hub” where the grandstands currently sit, which could include things like a rink, various sports courts, playground equipment, or fitness equipment and more.
Staff has had preliminary discussions with Sierra Planning, who is already working on the ongoing Parks and Recreation Master Plan, with the firm suggesting there is an immediate short-term need for that type of facility in the city.
The former QER property is being suggested because it’s on a public transit route and is also close to where the new YMCA facility is earmarked to be built.
$50,000 was put aside for the project in the 2020 budget, with the Rotary Club of Quinte already suggesting it would be interested in helping to fund raise as well.
If council approves the location, staff would be able to start to work out the full scope of the project and present a full cost outline in the 2022 budget.
