Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk has given a brief update on the city’s financial situation due to COVID-19.
Panciuk spoke on 800 CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show Friday morning and says the city is losing revenue in a lot of different areas including transit and parking fees, bag tags, recreation programs and more.
He’s estimating some fairly significant losses by the end of the year, but says the city is still in good financial shape.
He says there have been a number of steps taken to try and mitigate that financial damage, including moving bus service to on-demand only.
The mayor added that when it comes to recovering those losses through a potential tax increase, it’s too early to tell if that will be needed.
He says they’re also still waiting to hear how upper levels of government will be supporting municipalities through the pandemic and that Finance Committee Chair Councillor Bill Sandison will be making an announcement Monday about the budget process for 2020.
