Quinte West Council wants more information before it throws its support behind a unique proposed initiative to address homelessness in the city and the region.
Brad Denoon is trying to set up what he calls “Project Chrysalis”, which would essentially see a restricted-access community, made up of shipping containers that are converted into single-person housing units.
Along with the 16 housing units, his plan also calls for an office, education centre, solar power generation system, water reclamation system, storage space and an organic garden.
At this point the city has only been asked to support the project and not donate land, or money, but a staff report says those asks could come at a later date, depending on how much success Denoon has in dealing with senior levels of government.
A handful of councillors said they’d like more details on how the project would be funded and how it would integrate with other local agencies that currently provide low-income housing, like Hastings County.
Council decided to defer the support motion and ask Denoon to return and answer their questions, before going forward.
A date for that visit has yet to be decided on.
