The Belleville Senators swept their weekend road series in Cleveland by beating the Monsters again, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
That followed up Belleville’s 5-1 victory on Friday and gives the B-Sens a 3-1-0-0 record against Cleveland in their now complete season series.
Filip Chlapik, Darren Archibald, Alex Formenton and Parker Kelly all scored for the Sens, with Filip Gustavsson making 20 saves on 21 shots and extending his personal point streak to 10 games.
As was the case on Friday, Kole Sherwood had the only goal for Cleveland and Veini Vehvilainen saved 21 shots in the Monsters’ net.
Also much like Friday, it took until late in the first period for Belleville to open the scoring, but the Senators’ first goal Saturday afternoon came shorthanded instead of on the power play.
Formenton poked the puck away from a Cleveland attacker at the defensive blue line and rushed on a two-on-one, and floated a backhand pass across to Chlapik, who fired a wrist shot past Vehvilainen.
The only goal of the second came courtesy of an Archibald shot that appeared to hit the cross bar, but was eventually ruled a goal on review, after it went in and out of the net, off the inside of the bar to make it 2-0 after the second.
Kelly’s goal came 3:10 into the third when he finished off a give and go with captain Jordan Szwarz to give Belleville a three goal lead, but Cleveland’s only marker would come about 10:00 later.
A low shot bounced off the skates of Sherwood and fooled Gustavsson to make it 3-1.
Formenton would cap the scoring with his 26th of the season on a power play, also beating Vehvilainen up high with a shot that had to be reviewed, but went in and out of the net similar to Archibald’s goal.
Senators Coach Troy Mann says it feels great to sweep the weekend series.
He says it was a complete team effort that led to the victory, giving added credit to Gustavsson for his play in goal
The B-Sens now begin a crucial three game home stand against divisional rivals who are chasing them in the standings, starting with the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday and then two games with the Rochester Americans on Friday and Saturday.
