Belleville Police have made an arrest in the ongoing case of donation cheques being stolen from the Quinte Humane Society and other charities.
The investigation began after cheques from the Humane Society’s 2018 fall fundraising campaigns were reported missing, with that leading to other organizations including the OSPCA, War Amps, Belleville General Hospital Foundation, Gleaners Food Bank and Salvation Army, to make similar complaints.
Police believe that between October 1 and December 1 of 2018 a worker at the Canada Post Kiosk at the Sidney Street Shoppers Drug mart stole 52 cheques, totalling $7,795 and deposited them into her own bank account.
Investigators say the bank involved also suffered a loss because of the fraud and a number of donors weren’t able to get tax refunds for the missing donations.
Twenty-eight-year-old Britney McGuigan of Belleville is charged with theft of mail, seven counts of fraud under $5,000 and six counts of theft under $5,000.
She’ll be in court on September 19.
