External theft from Quinte Humane Society

The Executive Director of the Quinte Humane Society is concerned about many thousands of dollars that have been stolen.

Frank Rockett says that recently the society was contacted by a donor asking for a tax receipt, but no record of the donation was in the books.

Upon further investigation, the Humane Society found that several donations from supporters were never received.

Officials believe they went missing from the society’s mail box, and the cheques were cashed by an outside individual.

If you have donated to the Quinte Human Society, and have not received a tax receipt, contact them immediately.

In January of 2019 the Quinte Humane Society had a donor contact them to request a 2018 tax receipt. After a thorough search of their financial records, QHS determined that they had not received the donation in question. The donor forwarded a copy of the cashed cheque. It was then, from the post-script on the deposited cheque that they were able to determine that someone unrelated to the Quinte Humane Society had deposited the funds into their personal account. At this point they immediately contacted the police and hoped it was an isolated incident.

Unfortunately, in late February 2019, Quinte Humane Society learned that three other donors were also victims of the same type of theft. As these cheques had been written and mailed weeks apart, QHS became concerned that they were going missing from their postal box. QHS forwarded this information to the postal outlet as well as to the police and immediate action was taken.

Quinte Humane Society has asked donors that have made a donation by mail anytime over the last five months and not received a donation receipt, to contact the QHS’ office immediately at 613-968-4673. As the police are still investigating, it is uncertain how many donations were impacted by this shameful act.
