The 2026 Ontario AA High School Girls Soccer Championship begins Thursday in The Friendly City.
Co-Convenor Angelo Tsarouhas says 20 teams are taking part, including Bayside and Centennial Secondary.
“This is one of the most competitive tournaments in Ontario and all of OFSAA. We’re going to see some of the best soccer players from all over the province. Success locally would be if we could medal, I think we’ve had one girls team medal in our history in AA soccer.”
Tsarouhas says having a clean tournament and some local success is the goal.
“If the girls can get out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals, I think the tournament will be a huge success for them, and if they can get to the quarterfinals, anything can happen.”
There are two locations being utilized for the tournament.
“Thursday from about 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the same on Friday, we are at Sills (Mary-Anne Sills Fields), fields one to four. The same thing on Friday. Friday evening, we have the quarterfinals at Sills. Then Saturday, we ship over to Loyalist College for the semifinals and the final.”
There are tens of thousands of dollars in economic spinoff, if not more.
“It’s really a huge economic boom, just as we’re heading into our tourism season in our area. It’s going to be a nice little bump. We have about 480 athletes and coaches coming from across Ontario.”
