Prince Edward County OPP is reminding people who smoke to not throw their cigarettes into mulch while the weather is hot.
On Tuesday, an OPP officer conducting foot patrol on Main Street in Picton noticed smoke rising from the base of a planted tree.
The officer quickly reacted and stomped out the smoldering mulch that had started to burn after a cigarette butt was carelessly discarded into it.
Police are asking smokers to be especially vigilant during the hot, dry weather with their cigarette butts. Throwing cigarette butts out of car windows can also easily start a forest or grass fire.
All of Prince Edward County is on a “Partial Burn Ban” which restricts burning to a container with a screened top or a small campfire.
