Breakfast meetings between Belleville’s mayor and a couple of councillors is under investigation following a citizen complaint.
According to a report in the Intelligencer, Amberley Gravel Ltd. has been asked to look into meetings that occurred at Eggquis at the Bell Front Street Mall between Mayor Taso Christopher, councillors Egerton Boyce, Mike Graham and Garnet Thompson.
The complainant, Bill Sandison, claims the group gathered together for breakfast meetings on a regular basis on Saturday mornings at the restaurant around 8 a.m., sometimes joined by Belleville city directors throughout 2016 and 2017.
City clerk Matt MacDonald confirmed the investigation.
Councillors involved say the meetings were social in nature, that there was no city business discussed, and there were never enough council members present to constitute an official meeting.
Sandison claims the meetings occurred with regularity and he doesn’t find it plausible that matters involving city business were not discussed.
