Hundreds of police officers are running from Toronto-to-Ottawa this weekend, to honour fallen officers and today a group came through the Quinte Region.
The national Peace Officers’ Memorial Run started in 2005 and sees officers run over 460 kilometres over three days, finishing with a parade on Parliament Hill, with each runner wearing a name of a fallen officer on their arm.
Today’s route takes the group from Cobourg to Brockville.
Toronto Police Constable Laurie Braida stopped in Belleville Friday morning and spoke to Quinte News about the importance of the run.
Braida says participants run in groups, in a relay-style event, at varying distances based on skill.
At the end of each day, the entire group runs to the police memorial in whichever town they’re stopping in for the night and they’ll do the same for the last stretch of the run, once they get to Ottawa tomorrow.
