The OPP says it’s trying to develop and improve the way it supports sexual assault victims by announcing a new Victim Response Support Strategy today.
The strategy has three main categories including victim support, investigative excellence and improvements in oversight and is the result of an OPP sexual assault data and classification review, which looked at unfounded sexual assault cases, between 2010 and 2016.
The OPP says it will be improving resources to support informed, responsive officers, appoint victim response and support liaisons, and conduct ongoing training with updated data.
The plan also includes the establishment of a Victim Response Support Unit, along with a Regional Collaborative Review Committee and a Provincial Stakeholder Governance Committee.
The police force says of the more than 5,300 unfounded cases that were reviewed, 65% were cleared correctly, but just under 35% could have been cleared using another classification and 0.2% were reopened.
