Staff working for the organization that funds healthcare, including hospitals, in this part of Ontario, support a
plan to move most surgical procedures now done at Trenton Memorial Hospital to Belleville General Hospital.
This Monday (June 27), members of the Southeast Local Health Integration Board of Directors will decide whether or not
to support the recommendation to go ahead with the move of around 2,200 surgeries per year.
In the report, staff point to the in depth research done on the issue, and that the QHC Surgical Program leadership team along with physicians and surgeons agree the move will boost quality and access to care.
The report goes on to say that QHC will be negatively impacted financially if the surgeries aren’t consolidated at the
Belleville site.
Some surgical procedures, such as cataracts, cystoscopy, and other minor surgeries, would still be done at TMH.
If the LHIN board supports the recommendation, the earliest the consolidation could be finished and take effect would be at the beginning of next year.
Quinte Health Care’s Board of Directors had previously approved the plan, but the Minister of Health and Long Term Care put a “pause” on the move after a public outcry by residents in Quinte West and Brighton, worried about the future of Trenton Memorial Hospital.
Today’s news (Thursday) comes as the the volunteer advocacy group OurTMH is planning bus trips to Bancroft to appear at the annual general meeting of the Quinte Health Care Board this Tuesday to demand that the surgeries not be moved to Belleville.
