Water safety statement issued for Lower Trent watershed

Lower Trent Conservation is issuing a water safety statement due to unseasonably warm weather.

The higher temperatures will likely lead to ice melt, which can cause water levels to rise and stream flows to accelerate in the watershed, which stretches from Quinte West to Grafton and from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake.

While no major flooding problems are expected at this time, the snow melt could lead to ice jams blocking narrow parts of rivers and streams and residents along the shorelines are asked to monitor the conditions on their property.

As well, parents are reminded to keep kids and pets away from river banks and water control structures, which can become slippery and dangerous.
