The City of Belleville’s Planning Advisory Committee is recommending city council approve a zoning bylaw amendment that would make way for a large housing development at the site of the former Bakelite Thermosets Plant.
The recommendation was approved at the committee’s meeting on Monday.
According to a staff report, the proposed development would make way for 579 dwelling units across a range of dwelling types.
This would include mid-rise multi-unit dwellings, stacked townhouse dwellings, one-unit townhouse dwellings, and single-detached dwellings.
Parkland and the extension of the Shirley Langer Trail are part of the proposed application.
During discussion of the amendment, councillor Paul Carr asked about the environmental protections once that connection from the trail is made to the city.
Manager of Approvals for the City of Belleville Greg Pinchin says that the city solicitor and the Environmental Services department provided input on the draft plan conditions, noting the proposed connection must be cleaned up to the city’s satisfaction.
He noted that it must also receive all required approvals from the province’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Pinchin said that future subdivision agreements could include additional protections as investigations and cleanup proceed.
Following the committee’s recommendation, the amendment will now be brought forward to council at a future meeting.
