Belleville council will decide whether or not to move ahead with necessary repairs to the Upper Bridge downtown which links Front Street with Moira Street today.
Staff are recommending an extra $425,000 be added to the project and that council accept the low bid from Niagara Region Urbanlink Civil Inc.of $4.5 million including HST.
The extra money would come from a federal government grant.
The Upper Bridge is almost a century old and its last major upgrade was done 34 years ago.
Decorative lighting on the bridge will not be included in the work, as staff report vandals have struck the lighting on both the Bridge Street bridge and the Catharine Street footbridge.
It’s estimated that including decorative lighting and associated electrical upgrades would add $775,000 to the cost of the rehabilitation.
