Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings (Habitat PEH) broke ground this week on a build in Marmora that will provide
affordable homeownership opportunities for two local families.
A semi-detached home will be built on land that was donated to Habitat PEH by St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Marmora.
The property was originally donated to the church in 2004 by members of Marmora Masonic Lodge 222 and Jim Kerr Excavating.
As Rev. Bob Wright shared, “As I found out earlier today, this was originally a high school and then there was a masonic lodge, it seems this property, is really a property with a series of beginnings.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Marmora Mayor Jan O’Neill, members of the St. Paul’s Anglican Church congregation, representatives of the Anglican Diocese of Ontario, Freemasons, local residents, and community supporters.
Jim Kerr stated, “We had a vision that this property would be put to good use, and this groundbreaking ceremony is one more step towards our vision coming true. It will also provide evidence that while Marmora 222 Lodge had to close its physical doors on this property, the presence of masonry is still alive to support this community.”
Habitat PEH Board Chair Sheridan Jennings shared, “We deeply appreciate the church community’s vision, generosity, and commitment to making this project possible. These homes will give children the opportunity to grow up in a safe, stable environment while helping families build brighter futures.”
The construction is being led by Harmony Homes.
Tom Streek, CEO of Harmony Homes, shared his enthusiasm about helping bring the project to completion: “I’m so privileged with my team to be able now to complete the build, but you all have laid the groundwork, and we’re excited to finish strong – keep an eye on the days ahead.”
Now that the project has officially broken ground, Habitat PEH is welcoming applications from potential homeowners.
