Peterborough County OPP are warning the public about a paving scam targeting people in the area.
On Thursday, police received a call from a resident who told them about their parent being contacted about paving their driveway.
A person had knocked on the door of the home in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township, claiming to have just finished a job nearby and had leftover asphalt that could be used to pave their driveway for a low price. The person didn’t say who they were or what company they were with. No contract was signed, and the would be victims contacted the police.
Peterborough OPP are investigating, and are warning the public to watch out for similar scams. Some warning signs include “leftover material” pitches where they claim to have surplus materials for a discount, unmarked vehicles with no company logos, and high-pressure sales tactics.
To protect against scams, it’s recommended to get multiple quotes on any project to understand market rates, never pay full price up front before work begins, and to check the reviews and credentials of contractors.
