It’s been a long time coming, but the project to repair County Road 49 has cleared a significant hurdle.
During Tuesday’s meeting of council, Prince Edward County Council voted to award a tender for the project to R.W. Tomlinson Ltd.
The cost of the tender is $18,679,000. The winning bid by R.W. Tomlinson was the lowest bid.
This segment of work is set to cover the rural section of the road starting at the Quinte Skyway Bridge and ending at Picton. Starting from the bridge, workers will first work on replacing culverts along the road, before road crews begin work on installing an asphalt road surface. The project is expected to continue into 2028 before reaching full completion.
Councillor Bill Roberts was happy to get the project moving.
“I’ve been saying for 12 years now that the sooner we tackle the rehabilitation of County Road 49 the more money we will save, the safer it will be,” said Councillor Roberts. “Nobody could be happier than me that County Road 49 is going to get done finally. It’s a big moment, a big development.”
Work on the first stage of the project is expected to begin soon.
