Peterborough County OPP responded to a call on New Year’s eve about a car that became stranded on the ice on Cordova Lake.
Police were called at approximately 7:15 p.m. after a driver made a wrong turn in bad weather and drove out onto the ice by accident. The driver tried to turn around once they realized their mistake, but was unable to get traction. They left the vehicle and walked to a home to call for a tow truck and notify police.
When the tow truck arrived and they returned to the ice, the car had broken through the ice. The location of the hole in the ice was marked for safety reasons and the Ministry of Environment was contacted. No one was hurt as a result of the vehicle breaking through the ice.
The vehicle was later recovered from the lake.
OPP are reminding the public that no ice is safe ice, and that if you are unsure of the condition of the ice, don’t go out on it.
