The new year has arrived, and to find out what to expect in 2026, Quinte News spoke to Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson about the municipality’s plans.
He said that road work is going to be a major focus.
“One of the priorities is going to be to secure the funding, the remaining funding for County Road 49. We have been pressing the federal government to step up,” said Mayor Ferguson. “Hopefully we will secure that in 2026 so County Road 49 can get the due attention it’s needed for an awful long time.”
He also pointed to County Road 3 in Ameliasburg as another road that would be getting attention.
Another big focus will be ongoing work on the water and wastewater infrastructure, in order to support new housing development.
While talking about the coming year, Mayor Ferguson said that the costs associated with completing major projects will remain unpredictable.
“We’re as affected by the variability of fuel costs and other materials as the general consumer is, so it is very difficult to predict,” said Mayor Ferguson. “What we can predict for 2026 is that it’s going to continue to be unpredictable.”
He cited tariffs and inflation as some of the factors causing prices to fluctuate.
