Arson charges have been laid against a Belleville man in regard to a city fire on Canada Day.
In the late morning on July 1, 2025, city police, fire, and paramedics responded to South John Street, after a fire was reported at three adjacent homes on the west side of the street.
No one was injured in the fire, however, nine puppies died in the blaze.
The Ontario Fire Marshal and Belleville police began an investigation.
On December 11, 2025, William Mitchell was arrested and charged with arson and two counts of mischief (destroys or damage property).
He was held for a bail hearing.
Meanwhile, in late September, there was a fire reported at the rubble at the same address on South John.
There has been no indication from officers if the two fires are connected.
