The results are in from a study by Hastings County on the state of homelessness in the region.
A report on the October 2024 Point in Time check is being presented to the Hastings County Community & Human Services Committee during their upcoming Wednesday meeting.
The report outlines the check’s findings on the state of homelessness in Hastings County, on the day of the check. During the study, which took place on October 7, 2024, workers surveyed homeless people across the region.
The check identified 210 people experiencing homelessness. This is an increase from a study in 2023 which estimated 155 people were experiencing homelessness in the area.
Of the respondents, 46% were identified as chronically homeless, where they had been homeless for 180 days of the previous year.
The report identifies mental illness and addictions as the top reported difficulty facing people experiencing homelessness.
Not making enough to afford housing or conflict with a spouse were the two most common listed reasons for losing housing in the survey. Thirty-five per cent of people surveyed said they lost their previous home due to an eviction.
