A Belleville man is being accused of intentionally trying to hit a police officer with his vehicle.
Around 3:00 a.m. Sunday, city police were doing a traffic stop at Station and Pinnacle streets.
While speaking to a driver, the officer was nearly struck by a vehicle, intentionally driven towards him.
The motorist drove off at a high rate of speed, running a red light.
About 30 minutes later, police located the suspected driver at his home.
He is alleged to have failed screening tests and was arrested.
Twenty-three-year-old Derek Bennett of Belleville has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, impaired, operation over 80mg, and failing to stop for a red light.
He has a November court date.
