Works expected to soon start on the CNR Yardmen Memorial Monument at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre.
This week council approved that work can begin at the facilities main entrance.
The original price tag was for around $650,000, but was scaled back in the first phase to fit the budget.
Director of Community Services Dean Hustwick says they have also created to memorial, so it can be added to at a later date.
“Bronze children have been deferred. There’s also a model train to go on top of the monument itself that has also been deferred. The whole monument is being designed so those pieces can be added.”
The CNR Yardmen Memorial Monument is in honour of the work of the Yardmen through their benefit fund draw, which was intended to raise funds to help their members and their families that were in need.
“Ultimately they started raising so much money that they decided that they wanted to contribute back to the community in some way. They decided that they wanted to build a modern sports facility for Belleville.”
Work is expected to be completed by this fall, located at the main entrance off Cannifton Road outside.
