A judge is set to rule on a tentative class action settlement against a late, former Belleville orthodontist, who was alleged to have made video recordings of patients without their consent or knowledge.
The proposed settlement in the case against Dr. Anthony Garry Solomon and the complainants involved was reached on March 6 and if approved, would award $350,000 for damages for the victims.
It is estimated that each victim will receive approximately $1,000 net of legal fees.
The victims who will be part of the class action settlement and receive compensation were those who were notified by police.
Those who weren’t notified by police, or who plan to sue Solomon’s estate on their own, would not be eligible under the settlement.
Solomon had been charged with making and possessing child pornography and voyeurism in 2017, but those criminal charges were withdrawn after he died of liver cancer.
The ruling will come Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. via video conference from the Quinte Courthouse.
The public can watch the hearing over Zoom but will first need to register with the trial coordinator.
