The Electrical Safety Authority is releasing some safety tips for homeowners in flooded areas.
The ESA says flooding creates an increased potential for electric shock, when water comes into contact with electricity.
Among the tips released, the ESA says you should stay out of the basement or flooded areas, if you know the water has risen above electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, or your electrical panel.
And if that happens, you should contact your electric utility immediately to have them disconnect power, then have your electrical system assessed by a licensed contractor.
You should also never plug-in, or use, electrical appliances that have come into contact with flood waters, until they’ve been looked at by a contractor.
