Quinte West Fire responded to a structure fire that broke out at a house off of the Loyalist Parkway in Carrying Place, just south of the Murray Canal swing bridge this morning.
Firefighters from the South Murray hall were called out to the blaze at about 7 a.m. Saturday.
The older wood-frame home was completely destroyed, but a woman and her friends were able to escape.
Two dogs and some cats did perish in the fire.
The woman who owned the home was providing shelter to her friends, a couple who had lost their home to fire a couple of weeks ago (Mar. 29) on Wooler Road, just north of the 401. This marks the second time in only a few weeks that the couple has been inside two houses that eventually burned to the ground.
The house has a very small hobby farm beside it, with horses and other various animals penned off, so they stayed away from the blaze.
The cause of this fire is currently unknown and the investigation continues.
According to Quinte West Fire Chief John Whalen, the estimated damage of the fire is measured at around $200,000. Chief Whalen says the Red Cross was instrumental in offering victim assistance.
