In what could be his last meeting holding the gavel, the Mayor of Quinte West is going to do something he has never done before.
Quinte News has been told by several sources that Jim Harrison is expected to use his Strong Mayor Powers on a vote regarding data centres.
Council will consider an immediate freeze on all new data centre developments across the municipality.
The proposed Interim Control By-law would temporarily ban land, buildings, and new construction from being used for data processing facilities.
We have been told there are multiple sites in the municipality that are at different stages of the process, including the controversial Riverside Drive location (former Saputo plant), and a major development at the former Sonoco Paper Mill (now All Season Fencing), which would include a massive greenhouse and vertical farm.
A source who asked not to be named indicated that the former Domtar or Cascades site in Trenton is also being eyed.
The meeting will include a closed session with municipal legal counsel, nine deputations on data centres, multiple votes, and lengthy public.
The meeting begins at 4:30 pm and will be live streamed as well.
