A Belleville woman is facing a series of charges after a a disturbance in the city’s west end.
On August 22, 2026, just before 9:45 p.m., officers responded to a west-end residence, after being called. An investigation by police revealed that a man was returning home from work when he was unexpectedly followed into his home by a woman he did not know. The woman began yelling that she wanted her dog returned to her, but the home’s residents said they had never met the woman or her dog before. Police learned that the woman then physically assaulted the homeowner and threatened to kill him before leaving the residence. She subsequently drove a short distance down the street to another residence.
When they arrived, officers were directed to the residence where the woman had gone. Police identified the woman and advised her that she was under arrest, however, she refused to exit the residence. Officers left the scene and advised that an arrest warrant would be sought.
The following morning, Belleville police received a 911 call from the same residence where the woman lived. The caller requested police attendance but did not provide any further information. When police arrived, they were approached by a woman driving a car. When police asked for her name, the woman drove away. Officers recognized her as the woman from the previous night’s incident, and gave chase. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the woman would not stop, driving through a ditch and residential lawns in an effort to evade police. Ultimately, she collided with a police vehicle, stopping her vehicle and ending the chase. She was taken into custody without further incident.
Rebecca Virkutis, a 34-year-old Belleville woman, was arrested and charged with assault, uttering threats, being unlawfully in a dwelling, and dangerous operation.
She was released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville in November.
